Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson is the incomparable female American poet from the 19th century, who has inspired more modern poets than any other figure in U.S. history. She was unmarried, yet portrayed insight into love, death, and other abstract subjects with vivid physical metaphor. Emily Dickinson wrote over 1,500 poems, mostly unpublished, before her death.

Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 and died May 15, 1886. She was born and died in Amherst Massachusetts, where she spent all her life at the family home. Her father was a lawyer and politician, so she was exposed to society. However, she was a reclusive poet, and not a whole lot is known about her.
