As the title implies, I am not a fan of symbolism, especially if it consumes an entire novel. I am not a fan of The Scarlet Letter for this very reason. I've also tried to read on my own The House of Seven Gables. These two named novels have a very dark undertone that I prefer to gravitate away from. I am a very direct person, and expect my reading selections to reflect that.
I like to read a great story that doesn't have a lot of subliminal messages. I don't understand why authors can't just spit it out, so to speak. Say what you're meaning! I don't have time or patience to guess what your convoluted reasons represent!
